It’s around this time during the dead of winter when I crave warm weather and afternoon trips to the local farmers market. I want to be outside playing with chalk on the driveway and taking pictures of our daily adventures with the kids. I think if you are in the North Eastern part of the United States today, you feel this way too! I am just ready for the warm weather to start rolling in.
One thing I have caught myself saying is that I have been desiring photographing more throughout these days and weeks. With living in an area that has a definite slow photography season, it’s only natural not to pick the camera up as much. But, it doesn’t necessarily have to be that way. A while back I was reading Start by Jon Acuff and there was a section in the book that talked about actually doing what your talent and passion is. In his case, it is writing. He gave the example of a friend who approached him and asked if he was going to be a writer who speaks, or a speaker who writes. That seemed like a silly question to him, but the point of the question became really clear a few months later. He is a writer and oddly enough (or not so much) writers, write. They don’t focus on speaking or put all their time into worrying about speaking engagements. No, they study writing and practice writing..All. The. Time.
This spoke to me SO much. I am a photographer. I didn’t get into photography for the business part of it or the teaching opportunities or even the blogging (although I do love this blog!). I got into it for the art and my passion for taking pictures. I have wanted to be a photographer since I was 18; I just didn’t know it at the time. I am a photographer. And guess what? I photograph! This means that I don’t just wait for bookings to come and that I keep my camera down until they do. No, I have that camera with me everywhere! And I photograph everything. I pour myself into practice and learning more things technically. I work with different lighting and I read about different composition and posing techniques and I practice my editing.
I am a photographer and photographers photograph. So pick up your camera and get to it. Don’t wait!
Please feel free to post your daily pictures on my Facebook wall. I would love to feature some on the blog :-)
Sneak peek of my sister’s mini maternity shoot!
